Welcoming Richenda Van Leeuwen: A New Chapter of Leadership for CELI

The Clean Energy Leadership Institute (CELI) is thrilled to welcome Richenda Van Leeuwen as our new Executive Director. With over 25 years of executive experience in global renewable energy, impact investment, and climate policy, Richenda brings deep expertise and a powerful commitment to equitable clean energy leadership. Her career has spanned influential roles at the United Nations Foundation, Rocky Mountain Institute, Good Energies and the Aspen Institute, where she built partnerships and programs that expanded energy access, invested in clean energy, built renewable energy philanthropies, and empowered entrepreneurs across the world. Now, she brings that same vision and purpose to CELI—helping us strengthen our mission of equipping the next generation of clean energy changemakers with the knowledge, networks, and leadership skills to drive systemic transformation.

Within CELI, Richenda joins a dedicated team that continues to make our Fellowship and community programs thrive. Kelly Velazquez, Director of Energy Leadership, plays a vital role in guiding our Fellowship experience and ensuring that participants are empowered to become adaptive, equity-centered leaders. With a background in sustainable development, environmental education, and cross-disciplinary program design, Kelly is passionate about supporting changemakers who are tackling climate and social challenges through evidence-based, community-driven solutions.

Supporting this work is Jorie Heilman, Program Lead for Energy Leadership, who brings operational excellence and a deep commitment to professional growth for CELI’s Fellows and alumni. Jorie’s leadership in program coordination, curriculum development, and Fellow engagement ensures that every participant is supported throughout their CELI journey—and beyond. Together, Kelly and Jorie help translate CELI’s mission into action, building the foundation for a more connected, resilient clean energy community.

As CELI enters this exciting new chapter under Richenda’s leadership, our mission remains clear: to build an inclusive and diverse network of energy professionals leading a just and decarbonized future. With the combined strength of our dedicated staff, board alumni, and partners, CELI will continue to shape the leaders who power the clean energy transition—in cities, in communities and across the country.
